In lieu means “instead of” or “in place of”. In workplace language it most often appears in phrases such as time off in lieu, payment in lieu of notice and days off in lieu of overtime.
The phrase is useful but easily misunderstood because it sounds legalistic. If the audience is broad, write the plain-English version beside it: “one day off in lieu, meaning one day off later instead of overtime pay”.
