What is Business Rates (UK)?

Business rates are the UK tax on non-domestic property, charged on a property’s rateable value. For office occupiers they are a major fixed slice of occupancy cost, payable whether the floors are full or empty.

That fixed nature sharpens the utilisation question: rates on an under-used floor are pure waste, and releasing or subletting space is one of the few ways to cut them. Utilisation data is the evidence base for that decision.
