Aaaargh, no free seats, spaces or desks; Aaaargh, unnecessary stress and poor wellbeing

Picture this – a day in the life of an office worker…
Scenario 1: “Aaaargh no seats.”  A familiar cry, or at least a regular thought, for many commuters. It’s Monday morning. Whether you’re: a) a working parent who’s served a range of different breakfasts, cleaned up multiple spillages and already broken up several sibling arguments; b) a diligent employee who’s booked an essential medical appointment or gym session before work; or c) just a regular commuter making his/her way into work, you just want to know you’ll get a seat for your journey, or a space to park your car, and a desk in the office. What you don’t want is the additional stress and anxiety caused by “Aaaargh  no seats, Aaaargh no spaces,Aaaargh no desks” that so many commuters and workers are familiar with. Imagine then, when you arrive in the office to find… …“Aaaargh no desks” All the desks in your team’s area are already taken. Yet more stress and anxiety. Now you have to waste yet more time searching for an empty desk and setting up a new workstation. You won’t easily be able to catch up with your team members and you feel isolated from team activities. You may even be forced to work from a nearby coffee shop, which isn’t ideal if you’re working on sensitive documents or need to join a conference call. How does this make you feel? Most likely stressedanxious and lacking in motivation – and all before you’ve even started the job you’re paid to do. Scenario 2:Aaargh no seats.” A familiar cry, or at least a regular thought, for many commuters. It’s Monday morning. You already feel like you’ve run a marathon. Whether you’re: a) a working parent who’s served a range of different breakfasts, cleaned up multiple spillages and already broken up several sibling arguments; b) a diligent employee who’s booked an essential medical appointment or gym session before work; or c) just a regular commuter making his/her way into work, you just want to know you’ll get a seat for your journey, or a space to park your car and a desk in the office. What you don’t want is the additional stress and anxiety caused by “Aaaargh no seats, Aaaargh no spaces, Aaaargh no desks” that so many commuters and workers are familiar with. It’s lucky for you then that your employer has recently implemented a desk-optimisation tool. Hybrid Hero Thanks to this new technology, you have the peace of mind that you’ve already chosen and booked your desk in the office – in fact you’ve booked a desk for every day you plan to be in the office for the next month. This means, that even though you are currently standing on the train or searching for a parking space, you can relax in the knowledge that when you arrive at work you will spend your working day sitting at your chosen desk, surrounded by your team. You won’t need to waste time searching for an empty desk or a workspace in a coffee shop. You can be productive immediately, safe in the knowledge that you can easily find your co-workers should the need arise. And how does this make you feel? Hopefully relaxed and in a positive mood ready to start the day doing the job you’re paid to do! No more “Aaaargh, no seats, Aaaargh, no spaces” for you – until the journey home that is! The latest research carried out it showed that 58 per cent of respondents cited the prospect of not knowing where to sit every day as the biggest cause of stress when it comes to hot desking. In addition, 80 per cent of desk workers said office seating arrangements negatively affect their mental wellbeing.
