A permit to work is a formal written authorisation allowing a specific high-risk task to proceed, for a defined time window and under stated controls. Typical examples are hot work, confined space entry, work at height and electrical isolation.
The permit names the task, the controls, the people authorised to do it and when it expires. Facilities teams increasingly tie the permit reference to the contractor’s site access so an expired permit is visible at the door rather than discovered afterwards.
