Smoko is Australian and New Zealand slang for a short work break, historically a cigarette break, now any pause for tea, coffee or morning tea. It survives strongest in trades and shift work, where the mid-morning smoko is near-institutional, but white-collar Australians use it with a grin too.
For non-Antipodean colleagues, the translation is simply “short break”. Its glossary value is real though: workplace vocabulary is regional, and software, policies and communications that land in Sydney should not read like they were written only for San Francisco.
