PIPEDA, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, is Canada’s federal privacy law for the private sector, built on ten fair information principles from accountability to safeguards. Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec run substantially similar provincial laws in its place.
Like its international cousins, PIPEDA reaches workplace and visitor data: consent for collection, limits on use, safeguards in storage and access rights for individuals. Multinationals usually meet it by running one privacy programme aligned to the strictest law they face and applying it everywhere.
