The Privacy Act 1988 is Australia’s federal privacy law, built around thirteen Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) covering collection, use, disclosure, security and access to personal information. It applies to most private organisations above the turnover threshold and to federal agencies.
For workplace systems the relevant duties are familiar: collect only what you need at sign-in, tell people why, secure it, and dispose of it when the purpose ends. Visitor management is the sharp end, since reception is where organisations most visibly collect strangers’ personal information.
