An AI agent is software that works towards a goal by taking actions, not just producing answers: it can check availability, make a booking, send the confirmation and handle the follow-up without a human clicking through each step. The term agentic AI describes systems built this way.
In the workplace, agents matter because most office admin is a chain of small actions. Asking for “a desk near my team on Thursday and a room for four at ten” is one sentence for a person and half a dozen clicks in a booking system; an agent closes that gap by doing the clicking itself, inside the rules and permissions the workplace platform already enforces.
