What is Estates Management?

Estates management is the public sector and university term for running an organisation’s property portfolio: buildings, land, maintenance, space allocation and capital planning. It is the sibling of corporate facilities management with added political scrutiny, since every square metre is taxpayer or tuition funded.

Hybrid work put estates teams under formal pressure to justify floor space with evidence. Utilisation data has become the currency of estates strategy reviews, consolidation cases and departmental space charging.
