What is Fee Earner?

A fee earner is any professional in a law firm whose time is billed to clients: partners, associates, trainees and paralegals. The fee earner to support staff ratio is one of the numbers law firm management watches most closely.

In workplace terms, fee earners are why law firm offices are changing shape. Their billable hours can be worked anywhere, so firms compete on offices worth commuting to, while juniors still need proximity to partners for the mentoring that hybrid schedules quietly removed. Coordinated in-office days for matter teams are the practical answer.
